Online books. Please read and re-read two books a week and complete the quiz that goes with each book.

English

Genre focus: Narrative – Space

Lesson 1: Space - design our own planet

For this lesson, watch the video and make sure your child has a pencil and paper ready to do the activities (you can use the exercise book to do this in) and a ‘teddy talk partner’. You may need to help your child pause the video at the right times. This week, we are going on an adventure to Outer Space. We begin the week by learning about The Solar System that we live in. Afterwards, we design our own planet for our own aliens to live on.

Lesson 2: Space - to listen to a story

In this lesson, you will hear today’s story, which is about aliens. Listen carefully to the instructions. You will need a pencil and paper as well as a ‘teddy talk partner’.  Children will be thinking about their favourite part of the story and justify their opinions by answering ‘why’ questions. We also think about the moral of the story and consider why it is important not to judge people based on their appearance

Lesson 3: Space -  to commit a story to memory

In this lesson, we remember the story we heard yesterday and draw a story map to help us retell it.  Children will need a pencil, coloured pencils and their teddy talk partner. It will help them if you can fold the paper into 6 sections. Today, we think about the appearance of the character as we plan to write a character description later this week.

Lesson 4: Space - to describe a character’s appearance

In this lesson, we design our own alien to live on our planet. We think carefully about its appearance and label the different parts of our alien. When you’re done, give your alien a name and bring it along to tomorrow’s lesson, where we write a character description! Children will need a pencil, coloured pencils and their teddy talk partner.

Lesson 5: Space - to write a sentence about a character

In this lesson, we bring our aliens to life! We write sentences about their appearance, focusing on sounding out the words independently. After the lesson, you can create your own aliens at home using playdough, junk modelling or paint. Children will need their alien pictures, a pencil, some resources to make their alien with and their teddy talk partner. Please do not upload any of your child’s work online to any social media sites.

Please follow the correct links as given on the left. These lessons will build up skills throughout the unit and you will produce a final written piece in lesson 5.

Use the button in the right hand corner of the screen to navigate between sections of the lesson. You can pause the video and come back to it at any point.

Or, you could choose your favourite African animal or bird and paint it in the Tingatinga style. The animals are decorative and flat looking. There are often leaves, flowers and insects in the background.

If you don’t have pastels, you can try this project instead using any creative materials you like – crayons, coloured pencils, paint or even try cutting up coloured paper or scraps of fabric and sticking down to make a collage.  https://artprojectsforkids.org/draw-like-lois-mailou-jones/

The second black artist we are going to learn about is LOIS MAILOU JONES (1905-1998).

Type her name into Google Images and look at some of the amazing pieces of artwork she has produced.

You could start by learning a bit about her and then have a go at re-creating some of her brilliant pieces.

We always encourage all children to read at home and we know many of you have many lovely books to read. In order for your child to continue being able to read book banded reading books selected at their level of reading ability, your child now has an account with Bug Club https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0 where they have been allocated reading books based on their book band or reading age. They have books to read in ‘My Stuff’ and then after completing all of the activities based on the books, they will go into ‘My Library’ to read. Please use our pupil guide below to help you navigate Bug Club. You should have received their username and password through an announcement on Class Charts (the school code is popr). If you have not received this, or have trouble accessing the site, please email your child's year group address.

We recommend reading 1 or 2 books a week rather than racing ahead - quality reading rather than quantity will help you improve your reading more. The first reading should focus on decoding, the second reading will focus on comprehension and completing the activities and try some reading with prosody (intonation, pitch and expression) for a few pages too when you read aloud.

Home learning packs are also available from the Hamilton Trust https://www.hamilton-trust.org.uk/blog/learning-home-packs/

Each pack contains 5 days of mixed reading, grammar, spelling and writing opportunities, planned around a weekly theme. Some days contain a lot of activities so please don't feel pressured to complete everything. Notes for parents and carers are included, as well as sheets which can be printed for children to work on. However, this is not essential and written responses could be recorded on paper, in a notebook, or typed.

Bug Club User Guide

Maths

Daily Maths lessons are provided through White Rose Maths https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ which is a high-quality resource we use in school. For Years 1-6, each lesson video starts with a 'Flashback' to review prior learning, then a short tutorial video with example questions which are fully explained. A follow-up worksheet is provided for each lesson for children to complete, although again, if you don't have access to a printer, these can be completed on paper. Answers are provided so you can talk through your child's work and help them if they get stuck. For Early Years, each week is based around a story book but you don't need to have the book to do the activity.

Please also remind your child to practice their times tables recall frequently using Times Tables Rock Stars. Well done messages and house points are sent to the top 3 children in each Key Stage every Friday and many teachers set their own challenges and rewards for effort. If your child doesn't have their log-in details, please email their year group address for help.
